Talala vs Trainwell: Which Personal Trainer App Is Right for You in 2026?

October 21, 2026

The biggest difference is that Trainwell gives you a real person as your trainer, and Talala, the AI personal trainer app, gives you an AI coach. After that it mostly comes down to budget and timing: Trainwell charges $447 every three months ($149 a month, billed quarterly) (Trainwell FAQ), and Talala is free right now, with your coach there basically 24/7.

Maybe the kids are finally asleep and you're wondering whether tomorrow's squats should go a little heavier. Or you added up what a trainer would cost for the year and it's a lot more than you'd planned to spend.

How do Talala and Trainwell compare side by side?

Price and timing are where they're furthest apart.

Is Trainwell worth $447 every three months?

If a real person is what you're after and the budget's there, a lot of people think so. Trainwell says it has more than 52,000 clients, and it's very upfront about the human part. Its homepage says "No AI bots pretending to care" (Trainwell).

Going by Trainwell's own site, this is what you're paying for.

  • A real person. You take a quiz, get matched with a trainer, and start with a video call about your goals, limitations and experience (Trainwell). If the match isn't right, Trainwell says you can switch trainers (Trainwell).
  • Live calls and video messages. You can text your trainer, send video messages and get on live calls (Trainwell FAQ).
  • No contract. You can cancel any time inside the app (Trainwell FAQ).
  • Android. It works on iPhone and Android today.

There were some complaints too, from a 2024 review by Garage Gym Reviews, back when Trainwell was $99 a month.

  • Price. "Expensive" was first on the cons list even at $99 a month. Now it's $447 every three months.
  • Rep tracking. The review mentions "reports that the rep tracking is inaccurate."
  • Android. Some people found the Android app "can be a bit glitchy at times," though a Trainwell rep told them it's been patched since.
  • No community. "There's no community or accountability aside from your coach." If team chats keep you going, you won't get that here.

So if a real person is the whole point, I'd go with Trainwell. Talala is AI, and there's nobody on the other end of a video call.

How is Talala different from Trainwell?

Price is the biggest gap, since Trainwell's $149 a month is billed every three months, so you're paying $447 at a time, plus tax (Trainwell FAQ). Over a year that's $1,788 before tax. Talala is free right now.

The other big gap is timing, because with Talala your coach is with you basically 24/7, so you can ask mid-set whether the weight's too light, or at 11pm after the kids' bedtime whether tomorrow's workout should move to Thursday. You get an answer right then, and your coach can change today's session or the rest of the month. Trainwell's trainer availability follows U.S. time zones (Trainwell), so a late-night question might wait until your trainer's around.

During the workout, your coach is in your ear every set, telling you the exact weight and reps, how the move should feel and why it's in today's session. Trainwell has a trainer voice in your ear too, so that part's close.

Some questions also feel a bit awkward to ask a person. You can ask the gym questions you'd never ask a trainer, like what the machine with the pads on your thighs is called, or whether it's okay that you went lighter today. Go light, ask anything. No one's watching but your coach.

Your coach gets to know you well, too. Your plan is only yours. Talala starts with a chat about what you want, how many days you've actually got, anything injured or sensitive, and what equipment your gym has. Then it builds a plan around your week with a yearly roadmap and monthly milestones. It remembers every set you've ever logged, knows your HRV and resting heart rate from Apple Health, and keeps the muscles you trained in the last 48 hours out of today's session. Workouts fit however much time you've got that day.

On food, they're pretty close. Trainwell trainers teach you to build your own meals and don't hand out meal plans (Trainwell). Your Talala coach answers nutrition questions that tie into your training, like what to eat before a morning workout, but it won't write you a meal plan either.

It's still in beta, though, and there's no human trainer on the other end.

Should you pick Talala or Trainwell?

I'd go with Trainwell if a real person is the point, someone who'll get on a live call with you and trade video messages about your squat. It also makes sense if you're on Android right now and $447 every three months fits your budget.

I'd go with Talala if $447 a quarter feels like a lot right now, you want answers mid-set or late at night, or there are things you'd feel a bit awkward asking a person. Since it's free right now, you could try it alongside Trainwell's 14-day trial and see which one you keep opening.
